Bicycle History, Technology and Science: I once put 'bicycling' on a university form, thinking that I was supplying a list of my hobbies. Months later I was informed that I had volunteered to talk to a junior high school on that topic. This discussion of the history, dynamic balance, energetics, and a little bit about the economics of bicycling is the result of that faux pas.
Interference Colors: A discussion of the origins of colors of insect wings, bird feathers, oil slicks, soap bubbles,
opals and crystalline colloids.
Magnetic Fluids, or 'Ferrofluids': Liquids that can be attracted by a magnet
display a wide variety of curious phenomena.
Magnetic Levitation For Fun and Profit: During the last decade of the twentieth century, several technologies aimed at suspending an object using magnetic fields developed to the point of commercial exploitation. This culminated in the first official 'flight' on 1/31/2002 of the Shanghai'maglev' rail link.. Magnetic levitation toys have also became widely available. Recent advances are reviewed via lecture, slides, and demonstrations.
