PHY 525: Statistical Physics I

(I, 3) Equilibrium thermodynamics (laws of thermodynamics, thermodynamic potentials). Phase transitions (phase coexistence, Clausius-Clapeyron equation, metastable states, critical point). Kinetic theory. Equilibrium statistical mechanics (microcanonical, canonical, grandcanonical ensembles, bosons, fermions). Critical phenomena. (Lec. 3)
Prerequisite(s): 420 or equivalent, 510.
