Undergraduate Student
Majors: Physics (BS)/ Applied Mathematics(BS)
Class of 2001

Background Information

In elementary school my teacher told me to look up in the dictionary any word I didn't know how to spell. I spent three days looking for pneumonia.

I graduated from Coventry High in 1988 and worked full time in the manufacturing industry. I helped my best friend, Catherine, to decide to divorce her physically and emotionally abusive husband, then started helping her raise her daughter and son. We had another son, followed by twin daughters, and then we married on 31 December 1992. (There's a lot more to my family story. I'll be putting a link to Catherine's page about it here.)

From 1991 to 1997 I spent one weekend each month and two weeks each year as a Satellite Communications Technician in the Rhode Island Air National Guard. The worst part of that experience was the overexposure to bigotry, foolishness and all-around irrationality, but the best part was getting a lot of practice troubleshooting electronic circuits. The most memorable experience was the two-month deployment in Egypt. My unit was providing some of the communication back to the United States for the training exercise Operation Bright Star '94. While in Egypt we had a tour where we got to go inside the Great Pyramid of Cheops (this should be needless to say, but of course I had no mystical or supernatural experience inside the pyramid).

My higher education started at the Community College of Rhode Island, where I was preparing to transfer to URI and major in psychology. During my last semester at CCRI I realized I wasn't enjoying the psychology classes anymore, but I was having a great time in multivariable calculus. Since I had been taking the calculus courses for fun anyway, I decided then that I would switch my major to mathematics.

During my first semester at URI I was studying PHY203 for my applied math major when I realized that I had started studying the calculus to learn physics. I decided to major in physics and mathematics simultaneously.

Interests and Activities

I love tutoring at URI's Learning Assistance Network, although some weeks I cannot be there for a full twenty hours. (<HOMER SIMPSON VOICE>Stupid holidays!</HOMER SIMPSON VOICE>) I am an active member of the University of Rhode Island's Chapter of the Society of Physics Students .

I like '80s new wave music, reading, games, and puzzles.

Each week a lot of friends and I conduct collision experiments of stationary targets struck by rolling and sliding projectiles (though we just call it bowling).

Goal

Live forever or die trying.

Interests and Hobbies

Interests - I am interested in Einstein's theory of general relativity, quantum mechanics and its mathematical formalities, and getting the hell out of Rhode Island! My senior project advisor is Dr. Miquel Dorca, and we are investigating the geometry of spacetime around a black hole, and how it affects the dynamics of orbiting particles.

Hobbies - Drinking, literature, photography, photographing drunk people reading literature, classical piano, and writing about how ironically far from well this well-to-do society is.
