Gravitational contraction (energy production by shrinking) is a possibility.
This could produce lifetimes
of upwards of 1, 000, 000 years, but this is still short of the observed
lifetime of the sun. ( The lifetime is estimated geologically;
in the 19th century the
geologic estimate was short enough for gravity to 'have been'
the source.)
